PUNJAB

Punjab is a culturally rich and historically significant region in South Asia, divided between two countries: India and Pakistan. The name “Punjab” comes from the Persian words panj (five) and ab (water), referring to the land of five rivers – the Beas, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej – which flow through the region and have shaped its agriculture, economy, and way of life.

Geography and Agriculture

In India, Punjab is a northern state bordered by Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Pakistan. The Pakistani province of Punjab is the most populous in the country and includes Lahore, a major cultural and economic hub. The land in both parts of Punjab is fertile, making the region one of the most agriculturally productive in South Asia. It is often referred to as the “Granary of India” and “Breadbasket of Pakistan.”

Culture and Language

Punjab is known for its vibrant culture, energetic music (like Bhangra), colorful festivals (such as Vaisakhi and Lohri), and rich traditions. Punjabi, an Indo-Aryan language written in different scripts (Gurmukhi in India and Shahmukhi in Pakistan), is the dominant language. The people of Punjab are widely recognized for their hospitality, strength, and spirit of celebration.
