UTTAR PRADESH

Uttar Pradesh (UP) is one of the most prominent and populous states in India, both culturally and historically significant. Located in the northern part of the country, it shares its borders with nine other Indian states and the country of Nepal, making it a strategically important region.

Geography and Demographics

Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state in India by area and the most populous, with over 240 million residents as of the 2021 census estimates. Its capital is Lucknow, while Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra, Prayagraj, and Ghaziabad are other major cities. The state is divided into 75 districts.

The geography is dominated by the vast Indo-Gangetic Plain, which provides fertile land for agriculture. Major rivers such as the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarayu flow through the state, making it vital for India’s agrarian economy.

Tourism

Tourism plays a vital role in the state’s economy. Uttar Pradesh is home to the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Other major attractions include:

• Varanasi – a spiritual center on the banks of the Ganges

• Ayodhya – birthplace of Lord Rama

• Mathura-Vrindavan–associated with Lord Krishna

• Prayagraj – confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati

Politics and Administration

Uttar Pradesh has a strong influence in Indian politics due to its large number of Lok Sabha seats (80 out of 543). The state has produced several national leaders and Prime Ministers, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The state government is led by a Chief Minister and governed through a bicameral legislature.
